Stream of Consciousness Sunday: Smells of Summer

Welcome again to Stream of Consciousness Sunday. I have to tell y’all. I’m beyond flattered by all the support I received last week when I announced that SOCSunday would be living here. I want to thank Fadra again for trusting me with this amazing idea and space that she started.

Today’s prompt (optional) was inspired by both taking and picking up my son at camp this week.

What does Summer smell or taste like to you? And why?

Your five minutes starts now!

stream of consciousness sunday

Last Sunday, as I stepped out of the car and into the north Alabama (hot and holy crap humid) air, I was greeted by the smell of summer. The smell of childhood summers spent at camps.

As an adult, I’d kinda rather “camp” at the Ritz or someplace that will bring me drinks and not make me canoe down the river, but as a kid, camp was one thing I longed for each summer.

And it has a distinctive smell. It’s a magical combination of fresh rain, mildew, bacon, river water, bug spray and memories.

When we pulled in to pick him up again, the smell of mildew and stinky kid was a wee bit (a lot) more prevalent but the memories that were burned into the souls of the campers and were spilling out of their mouths nearly blew me over.

I’m proud of my Henry for wanting to go. I’m proud of us for letting him.

I’m proud of Camp Winnataska for allowing children to make memories of Summer that will last a lifetime.

I have so enjoyed hearing bits and pieces of Henry’s camp experience. It looks like SO much fun!

Summer tastes like frozen ice pops and ice cold sweet tea.

Love this! Summer tastes like my mom’s iced coffee and soft vanilla ice cream, but I skipped the tastes and smells and just wrote a brain dump on what summer’s been like for us here. :) Yay for SOC!

I always wanted to go to camp when I was a kid… never got to (unless you count the 6th grade camp all students went to). Childhood movies of camping were great, too!

You’ve also brought back many great memories of taking & picking up you & your sister from camps……..and it’s good to know that you have fond memories of those times, not just thinking we were “dumping you off” as some kids seem to think. You made memories that can never be taken from you…….and so did HL.!!!

It was always so fun. And looking back on it is even more fun! Thank you for always sacrificing whatever you had to for us to go each summer.

  6. I am so grateful to know SOCSunday lives on. I didn’t realize it until today when a tweet arrived at just the right time. I am not wild over what I wrote today, but… well. You know how that goes. Thank you for carrying on with the TORCH!!

Ahh, good old summer camp; I remember it well. At first, I was always lonely and then a couple hours later, I couldn’t get enough of the fun. Camp does a young body good. Thanks for the memories, Jana.

I didn’t get to go to camp when I was young and I wanted to so badly. I was determined that my kids would if they wanted. One just loved it and went every year.the other declared camp “not for him” and that was ok too. I agree with your adult type “camp” as well. This was an inspiring and fun prompt with perfect timing.
