Stream of Consciousness Sunday: The Grumpies

I was thinking the other day that I would do a non-prompt free writing day every 6 weeks or so. Are y’all down with that? What are your thoughts?

I know you have something you want to get off your chest… so GO!

stream of consciousness sunday

I miss Henry’s old school’s year round calendar. It was beautiful and there were no “grumpies” when school started back.

If you’re not familiar, year round calendars aren’t actually year round (mostly). His school started in early July, went for 9 weeks and had a 3 week break. Went 9 weeks, had a 3 week break. Went 9 weeks, had a 3 week break. Then went 9 weeks and had a 6 week summer.

It was perfect. There wasn’t enough time for the teachers to get fully burned out before a break. The kids were never burned out. They didn’t have a full summer to get lazy and bored and OMG NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY MIGHT HAVE TO USE THEIR BRAIN. Retention rates are fabulous and the best part…

THERE WERE NO GRUMPIES!

The first 2 weeks (or 3) are crap around here now. Henry is so tired, doesn’t want to do his homework and just wants to complain and be kinda a pain in the butt. And I mean that in the most loving way.

Are your kids grumpy at the beginning of school?

LOL, venting was totally the theme of my last post! I’m going to link up if that’s ok (I didn’t write it today, but on Friday… hope that still counts!). Looking forward to seeing what everyone else chooses to write about :)

  2. I like that idea Jana. School starts tomorrow here. My son (second grade) wasn’t excited at all until he saw the class roster last Thursday. I wish it was year round here too with breaks so everyone wouldn’t get burn out. I could tell even with the teachers last year – not nearly the same enthusiasm that they started off with. We will see how it goes. But I’m not looking forward to the whining either. My son isn’t starting out this year with any extra-curricular activity (soccer or swimming) so hopefully that whining won’t start for awhile.

Interesting because I chose to put our kiddo in traditional school because it’s all I know. Weird how you find one thing working for you and then it switched, why did it change – was it location or your school system? Oy. It’s crazy no matter what, I think.

Anyway, thanks for the free prompt today – I actually love just doing whatever works with my mind (although I did go over five minutes today) so I was happy to see it and link up!! xo

My kids are usually really excited the 1st week or so and we get up and out the door without too many hiccups. After that though we all have to get in a groove and adjust a bit.

  5. My kids aren’t grumpy, they are just exhausted. Emma is in rehearsal (this week is dress rehearsal) for a community theater play on top of the rest of this, so she will be a wreck for another week, I am sure of it.

Samuel is actually excited about school. His teacher praises him all the time… it rocks.

I have always wished for a year ’round school schedule. Unfortunately, we have never had that opportunity.

Let’s hope Henry settles in soon!

My son doesn’t start school until NEXT week. While all the public school kids go back to school, he just has to sit around and wait. I wish I had more to do with him. I love the idea of a year ’round schedule….as long as there is time for sleep-away camp.

  8. Gosh…you really liked year round school? I guess it would be great to travel places when there wasn’t the usually everybody-else-out-on-a-break crowd. And I can see the benefits with academics. But it would be a big adjustment for me. Hope things are better this week.

    I totally love this idea!

Why does my kid have 12 weeks off for summer which requires me to have to keep her occupied for said summer with enrichmen activities that costs three time what I pay for her to attend school?
Then let’s not talk about the summer slide…this country is doing so poorly but how are we to catch up with weeks away from the classroom. Also, I work all year round…make it even for everyone and lessen the strain.

It’s the best thing ever, I swear! I wish more counties would go to it. Graduation rates would rise and teachers wouldn’t feel like they needed 2 years off after every 9 months.
