Stream of Consciousness Sunday: Learning New Tricks

They say old dogs can’t learn new tricks.

I beg to differ.

The older I get, which OMG I THOUGHT I WAS ONLY 35 BUT REALIZED I’M ALMOST 37, I realize I have a huge desire to learn new things. Which brought me to …

Today’s (totally and completely optional) prompt:

What new tricks would you like to learn or have you learned?

Your five minutes starts now.

I crave learning. I always have. I know a little about a lot of things, always wanting to know more.

I ask questions. I’m curious. Nosy might be a better word for it, though.

I want to learn how to fry chicken. Knitting is on my list to master.

I want to learn REAL calligraphy, not just the pseudo-calligraphy I do already.

In my mind, I think with some practice, I could sing better.

Learning a little HTML code would be nice, as would learning how to fully use Excel. You’d think one would know how to do that by now, huh?

I’d like to learn how to be more assertive. Can that be learned?

Learning how to ask for help and then learning how to actually TAKE the help that’s offered… that would be lovely.

What do you want to learn to do?

  1. This IS WILD!! I was re-reading an old SOC Sunday where you had the prompt “Wouldn’t it be awesome if…” and one of my responses on my blog said, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I had a brand new Mazda?” well, guess what I got on Friday night?
A brand new 2013 Mazda CX5. Which I love. A lot! WOW!!! I don’t think I’ve ever been the first poster here, Jana. I enjoy what you create here in SOCSunday.

That’s AWESOME! Congrats on the new car. I bet it’s fabulous :)

I wish I could take credit for the SOCSunday idea, but it’s truly the brainchild of Fadra, she just allowed me to continue it when she gave it up.

  4. I would like to say assertiveness comes with age. I’m not as assertive as I would like to be. But I am more so than I was a few years ago. Is that hopeful? I’m almost 42 ;-)

  5. Michelle says:

I believe as we get more comfortable with ourselves and our endeavors the assertiveness comes out more. Great prompt and learning advanced Excel is definitely high on my list of things to do! Have a great week :)

I agree that it is sometimes hard to ask for or accept help. I, too, need to get better with that.

  7. I like you would love to learn more computer-ese. But learn to sing? For me that is an impossibility.

Given a choice I would like to go back in time, would be nice to be 37 again, would be even better to be 25 and do it knowing what I know now.

I have a lot of things I want to learn how to do, would be great to learn to how to play an instrument.

This was spurred on by my husband saying he wanted to learn to play the mandolin… I’m sure there are a plethora of teachers around here for that.

I was so excited to see this prompt today. I’ve been thinking about this subject all week. Learning new things can be such a huge confidence booster! I love your list. Have you ever thought of trying the 101 in 1001 days list? It’s awesome! You could add these things to it and be amazed with what you accomplish in a few years.

    Happy SOC Sunday!

That’s so funny that so many of y’all have been thinking about this. Have I mentioned I’m a little bit psychic? (not really kidding) I may try to come up with a 101 in 1001 or something similar. Maybe 40 before 40? I mean that’s been done only about a zillion times.

Jana, I swear you are my missing sister or reading my mind!
I was just thinking about what I want to learn and try differently in my life.
I love your list. I too think with practice I could sing better. I still desire to be a backup singer in a slinky dress singing “da-doos”
